| SSI's "Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks" Open for Public Comment |
The Sustainable Sites Initiative www.sustainablesites.org invites public comment on the new Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks Draft 2008. The U.S. Green Building Council, a major stakeholder in the Initiative, anticipates incorporating the benchmarks into future versions of the LEEDŽ Green Building Rating System. This important milestone builds on the initial "Standards and Guidelines: Preliminary Report" released in November of 2008 and will focus on measuring a site's ability to protect, restore and regenerate sites by harnessing ecosystem services- benefits provided by natural ecosystems such as cleaner air and water, climate regulation and health benefits. Follow the link to find the new draft containing over 50 new proposed prerequisites and credits ranging from site selection to sustainable maintenance practices. The public comment period will close January 20, 2009.

Austin City Council Passes Energy Conservation Ordinance
|
Earlier this month the Austin City council passed the energy conservation ordinance, a plan that requires homeowners to perform and disclose results of an energy audit prior to selling their home. Earlier this year the Mayor tasked the Energy Efficiency Retrofits Task Force to identify and recommend City Code revisions for cost effective and energy efficient retrofits to Austin's homes and buildings. The task force recommendations initially ran into resistance from the Austin Board of Realtors who argued that the initial recommendations amounted to "punitive mandates" against homeowners. But, in a refreshing display of civic compromise, the opposing parties were able to come together and agree to a plan that the Austin City Council passed with a unanimous vote. To see the complete plan by the Energy Efficiency Retrofits Task Force click here. For a look at the final ordinance check out items 47 and 48 here.

ACEEE Speculates on Energy Agenda of Obama Administration, New Congress
|
From the Climate and Energy Project
The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy weighs in on what we might expect from the Obama administration and the new congress in terms of energy efficiency legislation. Since the Obama adminsitration has designated alternative energy and energy efficiencies to be the foundation of America's future economy and security, the ACEEE suspects that we'll see energy efficiency play a large role in three major pieces of legislation; the economic stimulus bill, energy legislation, and climate change legislation.
With an economic stimulus package expected to pass within the first month of the new Congress, and energy and climate change legislation projected to pass before 2010 or 2011, the ACEEE details what they see as the the new administration's longer term interests, including legislation on next generation vehicles and biofuels, a smart electric grid, and advanced building codes.

| Time to Embrace Green Retrofitting |
From Triple Pundit
With new construction slowing to a halt, Greg Isakow from Triple Pundit discusses the current and future state of the green building retrofit market. The incentives provided by local, state, and national government will likely only increase as the focus on alternative energy and climate change heightens. Financial incentives discussed in this article are drivers for green retrofitting. The future of financing techniques, another major driver, is much less clear. Isakow goes on to interview Clark Wilson, President and CEO of Austin's own Green Builder's Inc., who discusses the green retrofit market and its new division that specializes in residential green retrofitting.

Green Building Product You Should Know About
Hemcrete is a building insulation system produced from a composite of lime binder and the woody core of hemp plants called "hurd". Placed as blocks or sprayed in the formwork between structural framing, Hemcrete has been used as a wall/insulation system in Europe for the past several decades. Recently, two British companies, Hemcore and Lime Technology, have partnered to deliver a hemcrete mix called Tradical, which they claim is a "carbon negative" product because of the carbon sequestered in the hemp. Tradical Hemcrete is distributed in North America through American Lime Technology. Click here for more info
