| The World's Weirdest Duplex |
The
SNAP house, the University of Texas' famous solar-powered modular home,
is now property of the Blackland Community Development Corporation
(BCDC), a non-profit affordable housing provider in East Austin.
Donated by the University, the SNAP house will join the "Harden house",
a rehabilitated 1930's bungalow at 1701 E. 22nd Street, to form what
BCDC is calling "The World's Weirdest Duplex". Amber Novak of the
"Austin American Statesman" takes a closer look at several symbiotic
relationships taking place in the Capital City: the two disparate
structures of the World's Weirdest Duplex, the relationship between
green building and affordable housing, and an unlikely partnership
between former adversaries the University of Texas and BCDC.

It's the Economy, Stupid!
|
Express News journalist, Jan Jarboe Russel, argues that unlike other
cities such as Austin and Portland, the argument for, and the future of
green development in San Antonio is derived from the necessity of
attaining a foothold in the new economy. San Antonio's Mayor Phil
Hardberger sees the adoption of green energy as the primary motivating
force for the city's economic future well-being. Among initiatives
being considered are creating a privately funded, multi-billion dollar
capital fund for investing in energy efficient projects, retro-fitting
existing low- and middle-income housing with energy efficient fixtures
and developing a 21st century transportation infrastructure. It's this
economic based pitch that will drive green growth in San Antonio, not,
as Russell puts it, "bloviating about the fate of the polar bears". Click here to read more

The Spanish province of Rioja has just given the go-ahead for the development of the Logrono Montecorvo Eco City, a carbon neutral city that will sit on a 52-hectare site in the Spanish hill country. The $558 Million (US) cost will go towards creating 3,000 carbon neutral homes, retail and sports facilities, private and public gardens, and enough solar and wind technology to power it all. Sustainable Manufacturer Lands in New Braunfels
|
By Alan Harmon
EH Systems, LLC, a local manufacturer of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) has called New Braunfels its home for the past three years. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) typically consist of outer skins of structural grade oriented strand board (OSB) with an expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam core attached to each other with a structural adhesive.
Stock SIPs are used for load bearing walls and as self-spanning floor and roof panels in thicknesses of 4 1/2 to 12 1/4 inches. Panels are produced in four foot widths up to 24 feet long and in jumbo sizes of 9 by 24' feet. With EPS R Values of approximately 3.6 per inch of thickness, the EPS panels by themselves have R Values ranging from R14 for the 4 1/2 inch panel to R45 for the 12 1/4 inch panel. SIPs are primarily used in residential and light commercial applications. SIP structures are stronger than stick construction, are erected quicker, offer have better thermal performance and provide superior control of infiltration, allowing for improved indoor air quality.

| Mexico City's Green Roof Revolution |
Mexico City is making an aggressive push in its struggle to fight pollution in one of the world's most polluted cities. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard is leading the fight to limit green house gasses with an ambitious $5. 5 billion "Green Plan" that will tackle a number of initiatives including the elimination of 6 million cars from the already congested city streets, adding subway and bus lines, and introducing new regulations to curb traffic. Undoubtedly the Green Plan's most aggressive course of action is a proposed initiative to canvas 500,000 sq. ft of Mexico City's dense urbanity with breezy green roofs. The plan, if implemented in its entirety would be complete by 2012 and place Mexico City just behind Chicago as the hemispheric leaders in green roofing. Jeremy Shwartz from the Mexico City Bureau of The Austin American Statesman discussed the challenges that Mexico City faces in meeting their ambitious objective.

Green Product You Should Know About
BITS Smart Strip Power Strip (model #LCG3) is a 10 outlet autoswitching powerstrip. It has a control outlet that manages 6 other outlets, so if you were to plug a computer into the control outlet and peripherals such as computer speakers, printer, etc., into the corresponding outlets, every time the CPU turns off or goes to sleep, the associated peripherals do as well. 3 of the outlets are designated as "always on". It's a great way to reduce "vampire" energy use in your home or office. Click here for website
