| Central Texas-Balcones Chapter to Create LEED Database |
by Zach House, Newsletter Editor
The USGBC Central Texas-Balcones Chapter (CT-B) is establishing a LEED Projects database, and the effort promises lasting benefits for companies, builders, architects, and homeowners across the 55 counties that make up the Central Texas-Balcones region. By undertaking this initiative, the CT-B is looking to establish an up-to-date directory to facilitate interaction among those companies, firms, and individuals undertaking the challenge of LEED registration. As well, the LEED projects list will serve as a conduit through which local green building enthusiasts can identify neighborhood companies and homeowners who have taken up the sustainability cause within the built environment.
In addition, the LEED database will open the lines of communication between originators of Central Texas LEED projects and the CT-B's rapidly expanding membership. Postings of project participants, certification dates, ribbon cuttings, and more will be presented to CT-B members via event announcements and the chapter website and newsletter. And, of course, once a project is LEED certified, the project will join the database with other Central Texas LEED certified projects.

| Another Gold for the Chinese |
Forget about Chinese gold medal dominance in Judo, Synchronized Diving, Weightlifting, and Trampoline, here's one they should be especially proud of: The Olympic Village in Beijing, home to the 17,000 athletes from around the world, has just received LEED Gold Certification under the LEED for Neighborhood Development pilot program.
The Olympic Village in Beijing is the eighth project to be certified under the LEED-ND pilot, and the first international project to reach certification. A joint 2004 protocol between the US Department of Energy and China's Ministry of Science and Technology resulted in plans to seek LEED Certification for the Olympic Village. Click here to read more

WebUrbanists takes you 100 years into the future for a glimpse of what green architecture might hold. Rotating towers that act as wind turbines, energy capturing textiles, and algae harvesting towers with fog catchers to distill fresh water from the atmosphere. Perhaps advances in medical science will let us all live to see the day.

| The House of Sun and Water |
Tonalacalli, in the Nahuatl language of Mexico, means "House of Sun and Water". It is the latest project by Environmental Associates, Consultants and Architects out of Houston, and while perhaps conjuring images of a home built in the sun drenched deserts of central Mexico, it is in fact the first LEED Platinum home within Austin city limits. LaVerne A. Williams, the founder and CEO of Environmental associates designed Tonalacalli for homeowners Laurel Trevino and Carlos Torres-Verdin.

This landmark contemporary southwestern style ranch house is expertly designed for passive sustainability, integrating many aspects of green home design including passive cooling and passive solar heating, calculated roof overhangs, interior mass, shading porches, high efficiency systems, and renewable energy. | Waco Chamber of Commerce seeks LEED Gold Certification |
The Waco Chamber of Commerce opened its doors on July 6th ushering with it a new day for downtown Waco. The Chamber building is just the start of what strategic development plans call a "Billion Dollar Decade" for downtown, and for what hopefully serves as an example of what's still to come- a decade of stimulating and thoughtful building design. The Waco Chamber of Commerce is expecting to receive LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council within the near future. With Waco's first living roof, a 9.6 kilowatt solar array, green finish-out, and water conserving landscaping and plumbing, the Chamber building represents the commitment to planning and innovation that will drive economic development in Waco for many years to come. Please follow the link for details on the Waco Chamber of Commerce building. |
