Light Pollution Reduction
LEED 2.2 Requirements:
FOR INTERIOR LIGHTING
The angle of maximum candela from each interior luminaire as located in the building shall intersect opaque building interior surfaces and not exit out through the windows.
OR
All non-emergency interior lighting shall be automatically controlled to turn off during non-business hours. Provide manual override capability for after hours use.
FOR EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Only light areas as required for safety and comfort. Do not exceed 80% of the lighting power densities for exterior areas and 50% for building facades and landscape features as defined in ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Exterior Lighting Section, without amendments. All projects shall be classified under one of the following zones, as defined in IESNA RP-33, and shall follow all of the requirements for that specific zone:
LZ1 - Dark (Park and Rural Settings)
Design exterior lighting so that all site and building mounted luminaires produce a maximum initial illuminance value no greater than 0.01 horizontal and vertical footcandles at the site boundary and beyond. Document that 0% of the total initial designed fixture lumens are emitted at an angle of 90 degrees or higher from nadir (straight down).
LZ2 - Low (Residential areas)
Design exterior lighting so that all site and building mounted luminaires produce a maximum initial illuminance value no greater than 0.10 horizontal and vertical footcandles at the site boundary and no greater than 0.01 horizontal footcandles 10 feet beyond the site boundary. Document that no more than 2% of the total initial designed fixture lumens are emitted at an angle of 90 degrees or higher from nadir (straight down). For site boundaries that abut public rights-of-way, light trespass requirements may be met relative to the curb line insteadof the site boundary.
LZ3 - Medium (Commercial/Industrial, High-Density Residential)
Design exterior lighting so that all site and building mounted luminaires produce a maximum initial illuminance value no greater than 0.20 horizontal and vertical footcandles at the site boundary and no greater than 0.01 horizontal footcandles 15 feet beyond the site. Document that no more than 5% of the total initial designed fixture lumens are emitted at an angle of 90 degrees or higher from nadir (straight down). For site boundaries that abut public rights-of-way, light trespass requirements may be met relative to the curb line instead of the site boundary.
LZ4 - High (Major City Centers, Entertainment Districts)
Design exterior lighting so that all site and building mounted luminaires produce a maximum initial illuminance value no greater than 0.60 horizontal and vertical footcandles at the site boundary and no greater than 0.01 horizontal footcandles 15 feet beyond the site. Document that no more than 10% of the total initial designed site lumens are emitted at an angle of 90 degrees or higher from nadir (straight down). For site boundaries that abut public rights-of-way, light trespass requirements may be met relative to the curb line instead of the site boundary.
Submittals (DESIGN):
- Provide project sit /exterior lighting plan(s) that document the location and type of all installed sitelighting fixtures OR the drawing(s)demonstrate that the project has no exterior lighting.
- Provide the building interior lighting plan(s) and section(s) to document the location and type of all installed interior building lighting fixtures and clearly indicate exterior building surfaces to confirm that the maximum candela value from interior fixtures does not intersect transparent or translucent exterior building surfaces OR the drawing(s) highlight automatic lighting controls that turn off non-essential lighting during non-business hours.
- Provide the project lighting fixture schedule that provides information regarding the installed building and site lighting fixtures.
In addition, please provide the following based on the appropriate compliance path:
- For Projects With No Exterior Lighting - Confirm that no exterior lighting has been installed.
- For Projects With Exterior Lighting - For each exterior site area, complete the Lighting Power Density Tabulation Exterior Site Areas including the location identification, the units (Watts per square foot, Watts per linear foot, Watts per square meter, or Watts per meter), the Area or Distance for the specified location, the actual lighting power density (LPD), and the ASHRAE allowable LPD for that location.
- For each building facade/landscape area, complete the Lighting Power Density Tabulation Building Facade/Landscape Lighting including the location identification, the units (Watts per square foot, Watts per linear foot, Watts per square meter, or Watts per meter), the Area or Distance for the specified location, the actual lighting power density (LPD), and the ASHRAE allowable LPD for that location.
- Confirm the site zone classification for the project
- For each fixture type used for site lighting, complete the Site Lumen Calculation including the luminaire type, the quantity of luminaires installed, the initial lamp lumens per luminaire, and the initial lamp lumens above 90 degrees from Nadir.
- Provide a narrative that includes specific information regarding the light trespass analysis conducted to determine compliance, including the highest quantities of horizontal and vertical footcandles at the site boundary and at ten feet beyond the site for projects classified as LZ2 (at 15 feet beyond the site for projects classified as LZ3 and LZ4). Please provide any additional comments or notes regarding special circumstances or considerations regarding the project's credit approach.
- AND (For Projects With Special Circumstances - Either Compliance Path) - Provide an optional narrative to describe any additional comments or notes regarding special circumstances or considerations regarding the project's credit approach.
